Being Aware of Mindfulness

Humans have an innate ability to be reflective. We have an amazing capacity to consider our options and to form and revise our perceptions. Being aware of this ability, it is therefore a choice to react without thought or to choose to be mindful (Fig. 7.1). An overarching aspect for every decision you make is, “How aware do I want to be of the ethical elements of this circumstance?” How considerate do you want to be in terms of the ethical aspects of your thoughts and actions? It takes effort to reflect on the ethics of any situation. Do you take the time to look for where and how you can exercise your character? Do you look for the moral concerns or ethical risks within an activity before you act? Do you look for how to broach a situation with character strength? Many people toss their power of ethicality away, allowing decisions to be made without reflective consideration. Relying upon assumptions about the self, other people, and the business context, we often proceed without ethical forethought. People frequently respond to a situation, then justify what they have done after they have already acted! Backdating explanations for behavior can potentially shroud a person from seeing their real (versus perceived) ethical identity. Sustained justification of your actions, rather than mindful reflective consideration, may block you from seeing how your behavior is incongruent with your personal values.
